the devil is in the details

Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe

I have learnt to greatly respect deep, industry specific, expertise. The best in their trade stay the best because they are the most practiced and focused in the nuances of what they do.

The big consultancies claim that their cookie-cutter approaches work for all industries. I disagree. Their truth is that many high level best practices transcend the industry segment. And this is true. But try getting it done if you speak Fish processing in a Semi-conductor fab.

I focus on practical, get it done, operational advice. That essential truth has to be phrased in a language that the factory understands. It has to respect their expertise to be practical.

Let me share what I have learnt.

Scientific Instruments – a window on worldwide industry

  • I grew up inside Instron, the leader in Tensile Testing machines as we grew from electromechanical testing equipment, to Servo-hydraulic, Automotive test, hardness testing, Shore durometry ……
  • One of the joys of Scientific Instruments is the range of customer applications. NASA one-day. A turkey grower the next. ASTM Standards one day. NVLAP, NADCAP, 21 CFR…..
  • As Instron’s VP of Quality it was my job to tailor our products to each customer segments need – and then go out and fix it if it didn’t.
  • I have sat at ASTM Conferences with Aerospace manufacturers. Flown to Brazil to deal with a shut down car line. Have sat cross legged on the floor in China drawing stress-strain curves on the floor in chalk with an automotive component entrepreneur.
